REUNIONS:  This note is mostly for those of you who have never attended a USS GALVESTON reunion as yet.  You do not know what a GREAT time you are missing out on by not being there.  I don’t care when you served on the old GAL, 58-70, when we all get together we all shoot the breeze and tell our sea stories.  It is just like being with family and old friends.  If you don’t believe this, come to a reunion and see for yourself I know you would have a wonderful time.

Soupy Campbell

PRESIDENT’S CORNER:  It is getting near our 2012 Reunion in Colorado Springs, and I for one, am getting anxious.  Last year, in Buffalo, was a real good one and it seemed to me that everyone had a good time, with a couple of minor exceptions.  Fred Marks getting ill was one real sad one.  He, sadly, is gone now, but Gloria seems to be holding up OK.  On the bright side, the hotel was fine, Edwin (the sales manager), and his staff were outstanding, and how about that banquet, wow!  The tours to Niagara Falls and the Sister Ship USS LITTLE ROCK CLG-4 went off without a hitch.

This year we’ll be staying at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Colorado Springs and it appears to be as good or better with an equally fine staff.  There are many tours available this year through a travel agent, and believe me there are many things to do there.  One thing to remember though, the hotel is at 6000 ft above sea level, and that effects you in many ways.  Anyway, I look forward to seeing everyone again and meeting new ones too.  Donna and I both wish all of you health and happiness in the meantime.

Stan Shock

GALS VICE PRESIDENT’S CORNER:  Hey Ya’ll, As you may know, we will be having our reunion in September.  I can’t wait!  You need to be there with me!  Friends, fun, and laughs are waiting for you!  A reminder to each of you, that we request that you bring at least one item (minimum of at least $20.00) for the Gals Auction.  You are welcome to bring as many as you like as they are greatly appreciated.  The Gals Auction is scheduled during the reunion and is for the entire group—male and female!  We have lots of fun and bidding wars as well.  You have to keep a close watch on the auctioneer as she has been known to run the bid up on the very person that’s bidding!  It’s all in fun and you can call her hand on it, of course she doesn’t like to back down!  The purpose of the auction is to raise money that supports the GALVESTON Shipmates Association and purchase snacks, etc. for the reunion hospitality room.  If you have never been to the reunion some examples of items are:  anything naval, homemade items, jewelry, books, etc.  If you need help or need to ask questions feel free to contact Gals President, Donna Shock, Gals Vice President, Linda (Sweetthang) Hawkins or any officers or members.  I just can’t wait for September—you know I’m going

To get all the hugs and kisses I can!  Can’t wait to see YOU there!  Hugs, and kisses—Linda aka Sweetthang

LAST NOTE  UNTIL OCTOBER NEWSLETTER:  First USS GALVESTON Jackets.  I have received requests again from a couple of shipmates requesting jackets, so once again anyone who would like to order a jacket please call me on the toll free 866-398-2655 and all I will need at first is your name and size jacket.  We need at least a half dozen personnel to order so we can keep the price around $45.00 (which includes shipping and a USS GALVESTON patch for the jacket).  I will keep everyone who makes a order in touch whether we get enough people or not.  Any questions contact me.  The menu for the reunion dinner is: Mixed field garden salad and fresh fruit salad, seared chicken breast, peppered sirloin, roast pork loin, rice pilaf and roasted baby red potatoes, bouquet of fresh vegetables and desserts.  Hope to see you at the reunion.
