January 2012 Newsletter

First of all I wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year in 2012.

27TH REUNION 2012: We are staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 2886 S. Circle Dr., Colorado Springs, CO, 80906. The dates are Wednesday, September 26 (check-in) thru Sunday, September 30 (check-out). Rooms are $99.00 (plus tax) per night. To phone for reservations call the hotel at 1-800-981-4012 and inform them that you are with the USS GALVESTON CLG-3 Reunion. For those who are flying, they have a complimentary shuttle from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel back to the airport. If you are driving, they have complimentary parking. The cut-off date to get the USS GALVESTON reunion rate for the room reservations is August 24th 2012.

SHIPMATES CHECKING ACCOUNT: At the reunion Business Meeting it was brought up about me needing a Assistant in case anything happened to me, that the association might be in trouble with nobody being able to take over. It was nominated and voted on that Bob Bakos is the Assistant Secretary/Treasurer so that he could take over if anything happened to me. Also it was brought up as to why we were not listed as a Non-Profit-Organization with our checking account. When I was first put in office in 1993 we were a lot smaller organization back then, and back then I really didn't think about that. We are now up to 520 Shipmates/Honorary Members and it is only proper that we are filed as a Non-Profit-Organization. In view of this we have filed and are now registered with the IRS as a Non-Profit and Tax Exempt Organization.

CORR. TO OCT 2011 NEWSLETTER: On page two and three I had the list of names of attendees who were at the reunion. My apologies to Fred and Gloria Marks, I left their names off. Fred and Gloria were out shopping with the Gals Pres and VPres. They are always a great help to all the officers during the reunions. This time unfortunately Fred took ill at the market and had to be rushed to the hospital. He was hospitalized and they found out that he had cancer in the brain area. He and Gloria had a chance to stop in at the reunion just before they had a friend drive them home to FL. He is now undergoing cancer treatments with radiation and chemo treatments in Tampa, FL. Please send your thoughts and prayers their way that he will be able to beat the cancer. This changes the head count of the reunion to 231 instead of 229.

GALVESTON JACKETS AND ROCKERS: When I put out the word about GALVESTON jackets last time we had 12 shipmates purchase jackets and with that many buying, the cost with shipping and a GALVESTON patch was only $45.00, which I think is good. Also, I have plenty of USS GALVESTON rockers now (rocker: blue shoulder patch around right shoulder with the ships name in white embroidery on it). The price is $1.50 each with no shipping costs. I have already had GALVESTON jacket requests, four (04) H CHAMBERS, LOPEZ. REYES, and SAHR, so in view of this I am taking orders again for USS GALVESTON jackets. Remember, we need at least 10 personnel ordering or the price will be too high. Any questions, feel free to contact me.

POEM BY SHIPMATE DON GLESSNER:

As our ship cuts through the water so blue, and the foam tops the waves we make,

I stop and stare and breathe the pure air, and cast a long glance at our wake,

though I look all around naught can be found, but this glorious dark blue sea,

I'll be leaving it soon, but it's lingering tune, will always recall it to me.

50/50 TICKETS: I am mailing the annual 50/50 drawing tickets early this year. The tickets are $1.00 each and are sold as a group of ten (which means $10.00). This will give plenty of time to mail your stubs in to me. PLEASE if you are going to buy your tickets, before you mail them back to me make sure that you put your name on the stub with the printing on it. Thank you. Now as I always inform you, the 50/50 is not mandatory, but it helps take care of some of the yearly expenses. And as usual, a big thanks to our generous Galveston Gals annual donation from their auction, which also helps the shipmates association. If you do not wish to indulge then just throw the tickets away. do not mail them back. At last years drawing held at the reunion dinner the winners were Ron and Fran Strah in the amount for their half $1,580.00. We will be having our annual Clock Raffle also and I do not mail them to you unless you request to take a chance for the USS GALVESTON Clock. The clock raffle tickets are 5 tickets for $10.00. Any questions feel free to contact me.

On behalf of ALL THE OFFICERS of the USS GALVESTON CLG-3 Family We Wish you a HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR IN 2012.
