Another reunion has come and gone.  Portland, Oregon welcomed the USS Galveston CLG-3 with open arms.  All had a good time, from experiencing Voodoo Donuts to the breathtaking Oregon Sea Shore and the Multnomah Falls.  Raffle winners included: Chief Dino DeLucia and his wife Delores who received a personal tour of the area by locals, Shipmate Martin Lugar and his wife Judy, Martin also donated a clock that he made in the shape of a wrist watch, won by Sonja Holcomb. A Captain’s clock was won by Thomas Boomer and the 50/50 raffle in the amount of $735 was won by Bob Lindley.  Bob donated $210 back to the Association.  A big Thank You Bob.  The Reunion wrapped up with the annual banquet on Saturday night.  Thank you the all 79 persons who attended the 30th Reunion.

Deceased:

We were informed of the passing of our Shipmate and friend Daniel MacLean.  Dan suffered a stroke while at the Portland Reunion and passed away on September 5.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Lois and their Family.  May he rest in peace.

Galveston Gals News:

A big thank you to all who lent a hand in Portland.  The annual auction raised $1,340 and the raffle of the clocks raised $590 thanks to your generosity.  The Auction, dues and raffles allow us to continue providing snacks for the Hospitality room, pens and any gifts our funds allow.  Please remember to bring an item for auction for the 2016 Reunion in San Antonio, Texas.

Association Dues:

2016 – 2017 dues are now being recorded.  Please remit the Shipmates dues to Bob Bakos, 2826 Custer Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA  15227 and continue to be $20.  Make checks payable to the USS Galveston Shipmates Association. Galveston Gals’ dues are $10 and checks are to be made to the Galveston Gals.  Send Gals’ dues to Jane Bakos, 2826 Custer Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA  15227.  Thank you for keeping dues current.

News from the Executive Board:

As all of you are now aware, Tom “Soupy” Campbell is no longer involved in the USS Shipmates Association.  For this reason, the checking account is at an extremely low balance.  We have no doubt that funds will build back up and will get back on our feet once more, even stronger than it was.  All correspondence throughout this year is to go to Bob Bakos, address above, phone number:  412-882-1591, as he has taken over the Secretary/Treasurer duties on an interim basis.  We thank Bob for this task and know he will help us in reestablishing the respect and trust of our members.  Let’s all help in making The USS Galveston CLG-3 Shipmates Association a Proud and Honorable group of Sailors and Marines.

We are trying to eliminate as much postal use as possible in order to save money and stay current with modern technology.  If you change your email, please help us by sending your new address to:

Bob Bakos at robjan714@comcast.net
or to
Bob Rank Bob@USSGalveston.org

Thank you for helping.

News Shipmate:

We would like to welcome Joe Endres to our Association.  Joe was a Hospitalman 3rd Class and served on the original USS Galveston CL-93 pre-commisioning crew in 1946.  CL-93 was launched in Philadelphia 22 April 1945. The cruiser's construction was suspended when nearly complete on 24 June 1946; and the hull assigned to the Philadelphia Group of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. She was reclassified CLG-93 on 4 February 1956; then reclassified to CLG-3 on 23 May 1957; and commissioned at Philadelphia 28 May 1958, Captain J. B. Colwell in command as many of our plank owners well remember. Welcome aboard Joe, hope to see you at a reunion.

..From your Website Crew:

We hope you like the new email newsletter format.  I't's just one of our planned, improved communication techniques that we hope will revitalize our shipmate's social network.  Please send any suggestions to:
